Photo Journalism in Berlin, Germany

Meet Winnie

For my photo journalism project, we were asked to find a subject and tell their story. Winifred Ann Emanuel works at a local flower shop in Berlin, I found her amid fragrant collectibles and a treasure trove of floral delights.   When she is not cutting fresh roses or maintaining her beautiful tulips, her free time is spent with her other passion, that is her "child" her four legged constant companion Emmo her dog.  She enjoys the parks and fresh open spaces that Berlin has to offer and finds comfort and happiness walking through these parks near her flat amid her new found country men.  She lives in this wonderful city with her husband, a German native and had made many friends who also manage to take up a portion of Winnie's time.  Both ex patriots and Berliners she has many friends who she enjoys to pass time with.
Winifred moved to Berlin 30 years ago from New York City. She planned to stay in Berlin for 3 months on a visitors visa but the city captured her heart making it difficult to return to life as she knew it, so fast forward ~ she has been living here ever since. Winifred tells us that New York was strange for her when she returned to vacation there and visit family as now she has adapted to the laid back life she has in Berlin. Although her accent remains from her homeland the Winifred that I met exudes a sense of German spirit and I believe this floral magician has her roots firmly planted in this wonderful city.
